Madonna might have been confident that she was going to be able to adopt Mercy James, but unfortunately the court did not have enough confidence because they rejected her adoption.
A Malawi judge turned down the adoption on Friday morning claiming that in order to adopt a child from Malawi, one must reside in the country for 18-24 months.
If you guys recall, Madonna jumped over this hurdle during her first adoption, that is why many were angered that they ignored the law for David Banda. The law has been around for hundreds of years and many were upset that due to Madonna's celebrity status it was ignored.
"We support her adoption process," Information Minister Patricia Kaliati said yesterday. "Madonna's been good to us. She's supporting over 25,000 orphans in this country, and she's proved she can take care of David."
"Mercy is now assured of a good education away from the abject poverty of our village," Mercy's uncles, Peter Baneti told Us Weekly. "Madonna has assured us she will not cut her ties with us."
It's a shame that the adoption was rejected because regardless of what Madonna does in her personal life, she would have definitely provided Mercy James, 3, with the proper education and support that she does deserve.
UPDATE
Madonna isn’t taking no for an answer! She’s already filed an appeal to the court that prevented her from adopting 4-year-old Mercy from Malawi.
Her lawyer Alan Chinula told Reuters this morning, "I just filed the notice of appeal this afternoon on instructions from my client.”
We’ll have to wait and see if this will have any impact. We wonder how long Madonna will stay down in Malawi and fight to get Mercy, because this could end up taking a long time!
