Hey, it was better than an exposed nipple.
M.I.A. made headlines when she flipped the bird at Super Bowl XLVI. But on a scale of celebrity bird flipping—Johnny Cash being at the top, M.I.A.’s was pretty Justin Bieberish, so I don’t really see what all the fuss is about.
NBC apologized to their viewers for it. Yet they made no apologies about the Black Eyed Peas’ Super Bowl performance last year.
Anyway, now Madonna is speaking out about it, and she’s not happy. Not even M.I.A.’s British-ness can save her.
Madge called in to ‘On Air with Ryan Seacrest’ this morning, saying:
“I was really surprised. I didn’t know anything about it. I wasn’t happy about it.”
Madonna added: “I understand it’s punk rock and everything, but to me there was such a feeling of love and good energy, and positively, it seemed negative.”
Alright, I don’t know about it being “punk rock,” and I’m pretty sure Sid Vicious just heard that, spun in his grave, shot up, and then OD’ed again, but yeah, I guess it was kind of negative. Then again, the lyrics during her rap solo are “I don’t give a sh-t,” so it’s not exactly like M.I.A. was singing a church hymn.
“It’s such a teenager … irrelevant thing to do … there was such a feeling of love and unity there,” Madonna said. “What was the point?”
The Queen of Pop ultimately called the act : "just out of place.”
A source close to M.I.A. told the press that her act of obscenity was due to “a case of adrenaline and nerves.”
