Madonna Auctions Off Her Shoes for Charity
October 14, 2009 by: BRIDGET DALY

Madonna is auctioning them to support gypsy child education. The shoes will be sold during the Ovidiu Rom annual ball this month. This isn’t the first time she’s shown her support for the group. During an August concert in Bucharest, she told fans that widespread discrimination against gypsies should end, to which thousands of fans booed.
Leslie Hawke, president of Ovidiu Rom, told The Associated Press, “Madonna’s very mild comment regarding equality shone a spotlight on a common European attitude toward Gypsies. We’re thrilled to have her donation because she is such an icon of innovation and vigor and ‘can do’ spirit.”
Ethan Hawke will also attend the ball and speak to guests, who will make donations to win raffle tickets for the auction of donated prizes. This year's items also will include a gold chain provided by actress Vanessa Redgrave.
