Madonna landed in the African nation of Malawi on Sunday accompanied by her daughter Lourdes, 12, and sons Rocco, 8, and David, 3, whom she adopted from Malawi last year, but was greeted with bad news. She did not get her adoption approved.
The grandmother of the three year-old little girl, Mercy James, that Madonna hoped to adopt is reportedly against Madonna's decision to adopt.
Mercy James' real mother died when she was just 18, and Mercy was left to be raised by her 61-year-old grandmother Lucy Chekechiwa.
"Why doesn't this singer pick other children?" she told Britain's The Sun. "It is stealing. I want to go to court. I won't let her go."
Madonna spent about an hour in court Monday morning in the Malawi capital of Lilongwe, but the judge delayed ruling on her application until Friday.
One things for sure, she arrived in the country to a lot of criticism. Children's advocacy groups are accusing her of using her wealth and influence to get around Malawian law requiring an 18- to 24-month assessment period before adoption.
