Celebrities usually hesitate to say what they really think about Lindsay Lohan. But Elton John spoke candidly about the troubled actress with NBC Chicago at his AIDS Foundation fundraiser in Manhattan Monday night.
Elton said Lindsay needs to swap the "pampering" rehab centers for a tough "boot camp" treatment course, or else she won’t get any better.
"Lindsay needs to go away somewhere to somewhere like Hazelden in Minnesota which is a kind of boot camp,” he said. “But to get well you don't go to treatment centers which have televisions and swimming pools. That's not the way you do it. That's pampering."
Elton also said her family members are contributing to her problems. "You have to ask for help. And you have to be ready for it, you have to surrender to it and ask for help and accept help and get rid of the people who are around you,” he explained. “That's the worst. And by that I mean her family too, they're enablers."
Elton knows a thing or two about addiction—he struggled with drugs in the past. He said recently, “I’ve had a great career, but f***ed up my private life doing drugs,” he said. “I’m too old for regrets: everything that happened was for a reason — even the bad times. The trials and tribulations were my fault. I’ve managed to transcend the bad stuff.
“I’ve been sober for 20 years and it’s been the best time of my life. I’m a better person — forget the career. That has nothing to do with it. I’m very happy. It’s taken a lot of work, but with the love I receive from my partner David Furnish and friends, it’s the best life I could possibly have imagined.”
Wow—pretty amazing advice from an amazing talent. Lindsay should heed his warnings and get her act together. And if that means heading to this “Hazelden” place, then so be it!
