Lily Allen: Private School Is a Waste

January 08, 2008

Who needs an edumacation? Not Lily Allen's kids! The oops-I-got-knocked-up singer said that she won't be sending her kids to private school because they are a "waste of money".

The British singer said she'd rather just move near a good public school than waste money on an expensive education.

She told the Mirror: "I want to be living in an area that's a good catchment for schools and that's all I care about.

"I won't be sending my kids to a private school. It's a waste of money."

The battle of private vs. public schools is on! What do you guys think?

I think it's Lily Allen's choice and shouldn't be voted on.This is another article that asks the public how she should run her own life, she's going to do what she wants anyway.

hiiiiiii its me chitiz right here voting that private schools r far more better then of public system..In public all the teachers r work corrupted,,they wont care wheater the student r working hard or not..they just leave it,,where students do well or not..they even not motivates them..even the student will not get enough facilities... but in private student get different facilities of latest technology... student there r care by teachers,,, there is strict rules n regulations..which helps the students to mention descipline within themselves.. so student studying in private r far more good then of public.. that alll.. chitiz xstreetguy@yahoo.com

I grew up in Boston Public Schools and I had wonderful memories with low income children(immigrants, blacks, special education)and there were great teachers. There were teachers who just gave up because the system isnt right or the kids were just not educated enough to make it. But in high school I needed to tutor myself in libraries/internet to get SATs scores because the schools just didnt have sources or structure to help me. I lost interest in school because it wasnt at the right level but I pulled myself through. But the students in low income underperforming public schools are the most maturest but have the odds against them.

I think Americans should give a little more thought to matters of right and wrong. Ask yourselves what you can do so that millions of poor kids aren't totally buggered by a lousy fucking public school system. You might have to give up another selfish tax break, or see that the rich pay their share.

I think she's totally wrong for urging people away from private school. I had the best and most educational years of my life in a private school. I also went to various public schools that were both great and horrible. I think that, just like public schools, not all private schools are created equal. If she didn't feel it was worth the money, then obviously her parents didn't do their homework. Parents need to be extremely mindful of where they plan to educate their kids, regardless of whether the school is public or private. Even more important than school choice is desire to learn. Not everyone has a choice of where they go to school, and it's primarily up to the individual what they get out of their school. Put a student who doesn't care to learn in one of the best schools in the world, and you'll still end up with an uneducated kid. One of my favorite lines from a movie is from "Good Will Hunting", when Matt Damon's character says, "... you dropped a hundred and fifty grand on an education you coulda' picked up for a dollar fifty in late charges at the Public Library." So true. It boils down to this. If you want it, you can get it. You just have to want it.
