Lena Dunham. biography
Lena Dunham was born on May 13, 1986, in New York City and first landed in the spotlight when her HBO series Girls premiered in 2012.
Raised in the Soho district of Manhattan, Dunham developed her writing skills at the renowned Saint Anne’s School alongside future Girls co-star Jemima Kirke. She went on to study creative writing at Oberlin College in hopes of becoming a poet, but found her true calling in the form of screenplays and plays.
Once out of college, Dunham made her writing debut with the launch of her web series Delusion Downtown Dives (2009).
At the age of 23, she rose to prominence when she wrote and produced the short film Tiny Furniture (2010), an independent sleeper that resulted in the South by Southwest Film Festival Award for Best Narrative Feature. The film’s popularity ultimately resulted in Dunham meeting Judd Apatow, who is responsible for the hit comedies Knocked Up and Bridesmaids.
With Apatow acting as executive producer, Dunham began pitching her original series Girls to potential networks before being picked up by HBO. She not only writes the show’s episodes, but stars as Hannah Horvath as well. Her performance has since earned her the 2013 Golden Globe Award for Best Actress.
Dunham’s most recent acting projects include This Is 40 (2012) alongside Paul Rudd and Happy Christmas (2014) with Anna Kendrick.
