Don’t throw away your black man-leotards just yet... Dirty Dancing is still alive. (We hope!)
Hit shows like “So You Think You Can Dance” and “Dancing with the Stars” have helped keep the dream of a Dirty Dancing remake alive and relevant. But ever since Craig Brewer’s reboot of the 1984 film Footloose when another summer dance camp film was lighting up the gossip waves, the idea has seemed to cool.
Fear not, all you dirty, dirty dancers out there… According to Deadline Hollywood, the film is not dead, just postponed.
Initially, the film was slated for a July 2013 release. However, with producers still looking for cast, that date will have to be pushed until at least 2014.
(‘Cause, let’s face it… Who wants to watch Dirty Dancing during Christmas?)
Deadline also reports that all hip thrusts and body grinds will be as saucy as the original. Kenny Ortega, the choreographer of the 1987 film, will direct.
This is a far cry from Ortega’s directorial debut. The choreographer turned filmmaker is responsible for a slew of modern-day classics, including the High School Musical films and the critically acclaimed Michael Jackson documentary This Is It.
So what’s the rumor mill saying about who’s going to portray Patrick Swayze’s Johnny Castle? Take a deep breath, ladies… It might be Derek Hough.
The “DWTS” champ was reportedly screen tested for the role, along with “Brothers and Sisters” star Luke Grime, and Justin Gaston of “Nashville Star.”
Screen tested for the female lead initially handled by Jennifer Grey were Lea Michele of “Glee,” Liana Liberato from Trespass, and Canadian singer Nikki Yanofsky.
Pay attention to this one, Hollyscoopers… Sounds like a hit in the making!
