Lea Michele. biography
Born Lea Michele Sarfati on August 29, 1986, in New York, Lea Michele was drawn to the lights of Broadway at a young age. She landed her first substantial role as Cosette in the Broadway production of Les Misérables by singing "Phantom of the Opera," the only song she was familiar with, at the audition. In 1995, she played the daughter of a deli owner in the Broadway production of Ragtime before starring in a revival of Fiddler on the Roof in 2004. Her most prominent on-stage role came in 2006, when she starred in the rock musical Spring Awakening with her future Glee castmate Jenna Ushkowitz. Despite being a successful production, the two left the show in 2008, and ventured to the entertainment capital of the world, Hollywood.
Once there, Lea was more than happy to grab a small guest appearance on the TV drama series Grey's Anatomy, but ended up landing her breakthrough role as Rachel Berry in the Fox hit series Glee. When it came to her audition, Lea was anything but confident. "The piano player messed up the song, and they were laughing so hard I had to tell them it was a serious scene and ask them to stop laughing," she expressed in an interview with New York magazine.
Following the show's premier in 2009, audiences and critics immediately fell in love with Rachel, leading Lea to her first Emmy Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actress at the 2010 Golden Globe Awards and again in 2011. The show has also produced multiple rendition hits, including Barbra Streisand's "Don't Rain on My Parade," which resulted in several Grammy-nominated soundtracks and concerts across North America.
Aside from television, Leah made an appearance in the star-studded romance comedy New Year's Eve (2011), specifically Sarah Jessica Parker, and most recently voiced the role of Dorothy in the animated family musical Dorothy of Oz (2013) and starred in Glee Live! at Radio City Music Hall (2013).
