Following a series of leaked versions of “Applause,” Lady Gaga was cornered into releasing her next single’s official version ahead of schedule.
“DUE TO HACKERS AN ABUDANCE OF LOW/HIGH QUALITY LEAKS…WE ISSUE THIS POP MUSIC EMERGENCY…MONSTERS SPREAD THE WORD,” she tweeted earlier today.
The track is more accessible and far less controversial than another leaked Gaga tune entitled “Burqa” that also hit the web last week.
Instead with “Applause”—Mother Monster’s first single in two years—she returns to the grinding, straightforward dance-pop sound that first brought her acclaim over her debut, The Fame.
Think of it as a sister song to her 2009 single “Paparazzi,” touching on the same celebrity themes with the right amount of synth to make you slink your way over to the nearest dance floor.
Does it leave you politely clapping? Or giving a standing ovation? Listen to it in full here:
