Celebrities Involved in Charity Scams

Lady Gaga is being accused of “stealing” a portion of the proceeds from sales of the “We Pray For Japan” wristbands she was famously promoting after the Earthquakes in Japan.

Now one of those law firms whose billboards you see on the side of a public bus, 1-800-LAW-FIRM, is suing Gaga claiming she is pocketing a portion of the charity money and refused to reveal how much is actually going to the Japanese victims.

This isn’t the first time that celebs have been involved in a not-so-charitable donation scam.

Last year, a handful of do-gooder celebs were duped into a big charity scandal. Stars like Courteney Cox, Eva Longoria, David Beckham, Sheryl Crow and Jennifer Aniston purchased t-shirts from an organization called Millennium Promise whose proceeds were supposed to be donated to end extreme poverty in Africa. However, the organization never made the donation which was said to be around half a million dollars and the owner just pocketed the funds. Needless to say, the celebs and Africa were livid!

Wyclef Jean owns a nonprofit organization called Yele Haiti that delivers water and supplies to the earthquake-ravaged country of Haiti, but according to the organizations 2009 tax return, $105,000 was paid to a woman identified as the rapper’s mistress. Try explaining that to your wife and to Haiti.

Usually Bono is known for his philanthropic deeds like ending third world famine with rock concerts and constantly preaching to his audiences, but his charitable organization ONE apparently only donates 1% of it’s annual donations to it’s intended charities and the rest of the money goes towards paying the ONE employee’s salaries! Hypocrite!

Bristol Palin used her teen pregnancy drama to cash in on a quick payday. In 2009, Bristol was a spokesperson for the teen pregnancy prevention nonprofit called the Candie’s Foundation. Apparently, Bristol was paid a salary of $262,500 for her involvement with the non-profit but the group only disbursed $35,000 in grants to actual teen pregnancy health and counseling clinics. Be careful where you donate when celebs are involved. #justsaying.
