We all make mistakes. Luckily, for most of us, they aren’t usually headline news. If only celebs could say the same. But fame and fortune has a price, and that price is, we get to talk about what’s going on in their personal lives.
But there’s nothing like the feeling of having your mistake completely erased from legal history. And one thing that has the power to do that is the infamous annulment. That’s why so many celebrities opt to annul their marriages instead of file for divorce.
The law might not remember them, but we still do. So without further adieu, here are seven infamous celebrity annulments.
Renee Zellweger & Kenny Chesney: They had a beautiful beachside wedding, but the marriage ended four months later. The couple released a statement saying the breakup was due to “the miscommunication of the objective of their marriage.”
Nicky Hilton & Todd Meister: Nicky Hilton usually seems like the more level-headed of the Hilton sisters, so it was kind of a surprise when two months after her marriage to Todd Meister, Nicky filed an annulment. The couple blamed the breakup on their long-distance relationship.
Britney Spears & Jason Alexander : Surprisingly, this was before Britney’s crazed meltdown. She walked down the aisle, or possibly drive-thru, of White Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas in 2004. Her groom? Childhood friend, Jason Alexander. (No, not George Costanza.)
55 hours later, she made celebrity history by annulling the marriage. The papers stated:
"Plaintiff Spears lacked understanding of her actions to the extent that she was incapable of agreeing to the marriage."
Janet Jackson & James Debarge Jackson was only 18 when she decided to elope with her fellow R&B singer, James Debarge. Her management convinced her to drop the marriage, fearing it would affect her music career negatively.
Carmen Electra & Dennis Rodman: On the annulment form, there are a series of boxes you can check for the reason of your annulment. I’m pretty sure one of those boxes is, “oops, I married Dennis Rodman.” Carmen Electra was married to the eccentric NBA star for 9 days before they cited “fraud and “unsound mind.” Electra said:
“My advice to anyone is to not get married in Vegas," Yeeeeaaah…I’m not sure if Vegas was the problem here…
Ali Landry & Mario Lopez: It was about as stable a relationship you can have in Hollywood. They dated for six years and had long been planning their wedding. They made an adorable couple, and a bright future was ahead of them.
Then Mario went to Mexico. After being photographed cheating on his soon-to-be wife, the actress filed for annulment, citing “fraud.”
Shannen Doherty & Rick Salomon: “I haven’t made the best choices in men,” Doherty said about her 2002 marriage to Salomon. You think? The two dated a whopping two days before deciding to get married. It takes me longer to make a decision on what I’m going to eat for lunch.
