So, Shonda Rhimes just verbally reduced EVERYONE to filth and now Twitter will never be the same.
It’s that time of year when Ivy League schools invite celebrities to come and dispense wisdom to their graduating students, and unfortunately for Dartmouth’s class of 2014, they didn’t get Amy Poehler cracking jokes and telling them to follow their dreams. Instead, they got “Scandal” and “Grey’s Anatomy” creator Shonda Rhimes serving up a plate of REALNESS.
The entire speech was very good, but it particularly slayed social media when Shonda went OFF on EVERYONE, calling out all the “hashtag philanthropists.”
Oh. And while we are discussing this, let me say a thing. A hashtag is not helping. #yesallwomen #takebackthenight #notallmen #bringbackourgirls #StopPretendingHashtagsAreTheSameAsDoingSomething
Hashtags are very pretty on Twitter. I love them. I will hashtag myself into next week. But a hashtag is not a movement. A hashtag does not make you Dr. King. A hashtag does not change anything. It’s a hashtag. It’s you, sitting on your butt, typing on your computer and then going back to binge-watching your favorite show. I do it all the time. For me, it’s "Game of Thrones."
BOOM. Done. Shonda Rhimes just made you scared to write a hashtag ever again.
Her full speech is below; it begins at the 1:41 mark.
