Keira Knightley is using her celebrity status to get a very important message across to young women: there's no excuse for domestic violence!

Keira has recorded a TV commercial for charity WomensAid, to highlight domestic abuse among women.

In the disturbing two-minute commercial, made by Joe Wright, who directed the star in the films Atonement and Pride and Prejudice, Knightley is seen being attacked by her partner, who accuses her of having a relationship with a co-star.

"I wanted to take part in this advert for Women's Aid because while domestic violence exists in every section of society we rarely hear about it," said Knightley.

"Domestic violence affects one in four women at some point in their lifetime and kills two women every week."

The extended ad will debut on April 6 in 15-plus films in cinemas nationwide. Check out her shocking new commercial below and let us know your thoughts...

oh jesus im in tears. much appreciation to knightley fpr doing this ad! she has the sense of strength as well as vulnerability to pull it off accordingly. i hope that this reaches every VICTIM it is meant for. wow im literally crying! i spent 5 years in a hell like that & ironically the most realistic section of the ad was the sad, sick twist in dialogue at the end. playing on the phrase "i didn't agree to this" the writer & director did an amazing job using that to play on your mind. we have become so detached from violence & are accustomed to seeing actresses of strength like knightley hold their own. i feel that it is the dialogue that keeps the whole from having an anti-drug vibe. when you are abused, it feels very much as if you are in some sort of movie. at the moment of pain & shock you are so stunned you think ONLY in logic; as an actress might say "hey wait, im not ok with this" at that moment, it doesn't occur to you that there is no logical justification. & afterwards you devise justification illogically
