Watch out for falling asteroids girls -- this week is all about Seeking a Friend for the End of the World.
Ok, ok, so sure, a film about the pending apocalypse doesn’t initially seem like it would be Chick Flick Friday material, but hear me out.
It’s a love story!
That’s right, as the entire planet prepares to explode beneath our feet, the only thing that really matters are those intimate relationships we have formed with those around us.
Don’t take my word for it though, read the synopsis:
Set in a too-near future, a man searches for a meaningful connection as humanity's last days are at hand. Can he find his greatest love at the worst possible time? As the respective journeys of Dodge and Penny converge, the two spark to each other and their outlooks - if not the world's - brighten.
Anytime you’re talking about people’s paths converging creating bright sparks, you’re solidly into Chick Flick territory.
But let’s talk about the cast, it stars Keira Knightley as Penny. Keira rocks a corset more often than the rest of us wear socks -- which makes her romance royalty as far as we’re concerned. But despite a bit part in Love Actually, she has yet to really work that famous pout for comedic chops... but seriously, if she bases an entire career on laced up mid-section, this girl can do anything.
And if she’s not funny, Steve Carell, as Dodge, surely has enough to go around. Let’s forgive some his creepier portrayals of virgins and the like, and just focus on the stripes he earned for Crazy, Stupid, Love... then take a moment of silence to picture Ryan Gosling…
Sigh. And now come back to the point.
Which is, if you and your lady friends are looking for some surefire testosterone-free entertainment this weekend, this is one. Regardless of whether or not the end is actually near.
