Katy Perry opened up about her inspiration for her upcoming album Prism and it’s darker than you would’ve initially thought.
Talking to Billboard magazine, Katy said she questioned whether she should “continue living”—a theme that worked its way into multiple, soon-to-be-released songs.
Two tracks in particular, “Ghost” and “By The Grace of God,” which includes the lyrics:
Lay on the bathroom floor / Couldn’t take it anymore
By the grace of God / I looked in the mirror and decided to stay
Wasn’t gonna let love take me out
I thank my sister for keeping my head above water
Every morning, I finally see myself again
Universe calling my bluff
“That song is evident of how tough it really was at a certain point,” Katy said. “I asked myself, ‘Do I want to endure? Should I continue living?’”
While she doesn’t say it outright, “Wasn’t gonna let love take me out” sounds a lot like a reference to her divorce from Russell Brand and you wouldn’t be far off by assuming that, Katy said.
“All the songs are real-life moments,” she admitted. “I can only write autobiographically. I put all the evidence in the music. I tell my fans if they want to know the real truth about stuff, just listen to the songs.”
