Katy Perry. biography
Katheryn "Katy Perry" Hudson was born October 25, 1984, in Santa Barbara, California, and signed with Capitol in 2007 after having three record deals fall through. She later released her first single, "Ur So Gay," but she wasn't recognized for her talent until she released her next single, "I Kissed a Girl." Her debut album Teenage Dreams hit stores in August 2010.
Contrary to her lyrics of sexual exploration in "I Kissed a Girl," Katy was raised in a conservative family by her parents who are both pastors. Katy and her siblings were forbidden from listening to any rock or popular music and watching cable channels like VHI and MTV. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Katy said, "The only things I was allowed to listen to were the Sister Act 1 and 2 soundtracks." Her parents' tight grip did not deter her passion for music and she began singing lessons when she was 9. After learning to play the guitar at the age of 13, Katy started her rebellion against her parents by piercing her nose and proclaiming her pursuit of a musical career. Katy and her parents came to an agreement, making several trips to Nashville to record her gospel album Katy Hudson. Released in 2001, Katy told Entertainment Weekly, "It reached literally maybe 100 people, and then the label went bankrupt."
As a teenager in high school, Katy was introduced to the music of Queen, which inspired her to be her own person by refusing to limit herself to one social group. After receiving a GED, Katy moved to Los Angeles to work with producer and songwriter Glen Ballard, who helped launch Christina Aguilera and Alanis Morissette's careers. At the age of 17, Katy struggled to survive on her own and met additional disappointments when Ballard was unable to find a record company. Finally, after three records fell threw, Katy signed with Capitol Records in 2007, followed by her first single, "Ur So Gay." Her quirky lyrics caught the attention of Madonna but her career didn't flourish until her single, "I Kissed a Girl," rose to the top of the charts in the summer of 2008. The release of Katy's debut album, One of the Boys, earned her a Top 10 ranking on the Billboard Hot 100 chart while her hit single, "I Kissed a Girl," secured a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
In August 2010, Katy released her second album, Teenage Dreams, along with the hit single "California Gurls," which reached #1 on the Billboard charts. When commenting on her plans for the future, Katy told Entertainment Weekly, "Ultimately I want Katy Perry to be as much of a household name as Madonna."
