Katherine Heigl is giving back in a big way! She has just donated $1 million to the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation, which was founded by Katherine and her mom Nancy to celebrate the memory of their son and brother. In 1986, Jason, 15, was killed in a car accident.

The money will go towards spay and neuter programs in Los Angeles. “What’s happening is not only inhumane and morally reprehensible, it’s economically irresponsible,” Katherine said. “Killing is not a solution.”

She said she became interested in creating the foundation because she grew up with dogs in her house, and she felt their voice needed to be heard.
