Two years ago, Kate Upton was on the receiving end of some serious shade when a Victoria’s Secret lingerie casting director made a comment that Kate was the kind of girl the brand “would never use.”
In a new interview with V magazine, Kate revealed that she overheard those comments, made by Sophia Neophitou to the New York Times, the same day she landed the cover that catapulted her to stardom—Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit Issue.
“I had just gotten my cover of Sports Illustrated that day. I wasn’t used to that kind of media swirl,” she responded when asked about that frigid diss. “I had never met her, so it really came out of nowhere.”
Sophia did go on to elaborate why the woman who eventually modeled for Victoria’s Secret would never model for Victoria’s Secret, calling her “a footballer’s wife, with the too-blond hair and that kind of face that anyone with enough money can go out and buy.”
For Kate, on one of the highlights of her life, this low blow properly prepared her for her current career, an “introduction to being in the spotlight and having people you’ve never met have an opinion of you,” she said.
