Kate Garry Hudson was born on April 19, 1979, in Los Angeles, California to actress Goldie Hawn and comedian Bill Hudson, but raised by actor Kurt Russell after her parents divorced when she was a baby. Already exposed to the entertainment industry, Kate followed in her mother’s footsteps with a guest spot in the TV series Party of Five (1996).
After appearing in the independent films Desert Blue (1998) and 200 Cigarettes (1999), Kate got her big break when she assumed the role of Penny Lane in Cameron Crowe’s drama Almost Famous (2000), a performance that resulted in her first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
Following the film’s success, Kate began excelling in the romantic comedy genre with starring alongside some of Hollywood’s most talented actors such as Richard Gere in Dr T and the Women (2000), Matthew McConaughey in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003), and Joan Cusack in Raising Helen (2004).
Kate then experimented with a more thrilling role in The Skeleton Key (2005) prior to returning to her romantic comedy roots in You, Me and Dupree (2006) alongside Owen Wilson, Fool’s Gold (2008) opposite McConaughey, and in Bride Wars (2009) opposite Anne Hathaway.
That same year, Kate showed off her musical ability next to Daniel Day-Lewis in the musical drama Nine (2009). She further showed her versatility with a memorable performance in the crime thriller The Killer Inside Me (2010), before landing a reoccurring role as Cassandra July in the hit TV series Glee (2012-2013).
Kate’s most recent projects include, the TV movie Clear History (2013) with Larry David, the thriller Good People (2014) alongside James Franco, Zach Braff’s dramedy Wish I Was Here (2014), and the comedy Born to Be King (2014) opposite Ewan McGregor.
