Jay-Z Defends Kanye's Outburst

September 18, 2009

 Bridget Daly

With all the backlash towards Kanye West regarding his VMA debacle, we were surprised to hear Jay Z take devil’s advocate.

In an interview with BBC Radio, Jay-Z told them he thinks the situation has been blown out of proportion.

He said, "It's an awards show. He's just a superpassionate person."

Jay-Z did acknowledge the fact that Kanye was wrong to steal Taylor Swift’s spotlight. He said, "Of course it was rude, because it was her moment, but that's the way he really felt. I think it was rude, but the way they're treating him…He's on the cover of every paper. He didn't kill anybody. No one got harmed."

He continued, "I think it's a bit blown out. It was pretty rude. At the end of the day, we're gonna celebrate him for his passion more than vilify him. As he grows and matures, he has to balance that.”

"It just wasn't appropriate. It wasn't fair to Taylor. It wasn't fair to her at all."

One thing for sure, Jay-Z definitely doesn’t think this will end Kanye’s career. He said, "I don't think he should lay low. I think he should move on and have a brilliant career."

Do you think we should just write off Kanye’s interruption on his “passion??”

uhhhh... taylor thanked beyonce in the media throughout the week following the VMAs. taylor said it was very graceful and courteous of beyonce and that she lives up to her nice reputation. so obviously, taylor is quite thankful towards beyonce's generosity.

If Taylor is a "straw looking girl", Kanye should be a "poop looking man"... the kind of poop you pass after drinking a lot of rum. Jay-Z's comment focuses on personal friendship, rather than justice. "Nobodys got harmed"? Really Jay-Z? According to Jay-z, harm can only be physical! And "passionate people" like Kanye should not be allowed to be on stage. They are only good for Youtube or IMDB soapbox blogs.

Kanye already apologised and why has this been blown out of proportion? Is it Taylor's way of gaining sympathy, popularity and fame? Beyonce was really sweet about sharing her moment with that dingbat Taylor. I didnt hear Taylor thanking Beyonce for that on the recent VMA show. Forgive, forget and move on. Not everyone is perfect - Kanye is still mourning the death of his mother. My Dad died in 1998 but I am still dealing with it. Give everyone a chance. U idiots at VMA, how can you put Taylor in the same category as Beyonce who is a Senior. U started the fight by pitting a frshie against a senior.

I think the reason Jay-z is defending Kanye is because Kanye is his friend, and he wants to support his friend. However, Jay Z, as a result of the outburst, I stopped listening to your CD, I lost total interest in it. I am sure I am not the only one who has.

I'm sure this will all blow over soon. I would love to see what Kanye West or Jay-Z would do if anyone came up on stage and did that to one of them though!

goodness zippy. While I agree that Chris Brown has gotten off way too easily, I don't think that the issue invovling Chris Brown and Rhianna is- IN ANY WAY- similar to the incident between Taylor and Kanye. HERE'S WHY: Nobody knows for certain what occurred between Chris and Rhianna. We knew he had beaten her, but Rhianna didn't come forward or press charges. She instead, took him back. This led to a widespread speculation over the matter that had taken place behind closed doors. Kanye, on the otherhand, offended Taylor, not only infront of a huge audience, but on a live television broadcast across the world. There was nothing left to speculate. This is why the media is going crazy over this; because we were all witnesses. Dumb move for playing the Racism Card, both to you and whitepower.

I don't think it was a bad as it seemed. When he took the mike he seemed genuine about saying that he was sorry, but.........Let's get over this now! Taylor Swift is a big girl.

Jay-z is defending him because he conspired with Kanye to do it. Now he feels bad about the backlash Kanye is getting....A futile attempt to drag Beyonce down, and to some how lessen impact of the FABULOUS performance Beyonce was about to perform it was Amazing as so is she! She handled it in a very mature and womenly manner! Too Bad her husband is suffering from some sort of insecurity. Jay-z thinks he's so smart...he is just old and feeling insecure! I wonder how NAS is doing lately? ETHER ***SNEEZING Cough***

Amended for Typos- Suepastarr: Taylor Swift has recently...and probably, sold more albums than Beyonce--and yes, Kanye was behaving badly, but as you suspected, it seems to have been a set-up--a pre-rigged publicity stunt--as Kanye and Taylor Swift both share the same entertainment rep according to famed entertainment columnist Nikki Finke. Look-up Nikki's web site online for the details. As for my assertions, I think White Power, the new poster here (see his post beneath yours), underlines, and completely illustrates exactly what I was talking about. Black girl gets beaten to within an inch of her life...and the media and industry let the attacker, a black man...off, and say little to nothing against him, or...in defense of her??? But just allow a white girl's moment on the MTV Awards be interrupted by a black man, who simply says he liked one video over another, and suddenly...the black guy has stepped-over the line??? The irony, is you can try to kill a black woman--that being, Rihanna--who is equal in fame to a white woman--that being...Taylor Swift, and you still haven't crossed-over the line in the view of the media, and the industry, and even society as a whole (???), but if you take an awards presentation moment away from that white woman, while--not making any threats against her, and not physically abusing her, or trying to kill her, and you were simply being rude to her, in the slightest degree--and of course, if you happen to be a black man, watch-out??? Suddenly, it's..."N-Word", get back in your cage!!! "What, you didn't know...you really aren't free, you are still a slave...and a white life, is still considered to be of more value...than a black one?" That is my point, as White Power, the poster, has so easily helped me to prove!!!

Wow! You care way too much about this story. I just gave my opinion on the videos. You and anyone else can think differently if you like, I don't mind, and I don't take it personally. This whole incident was probably set up by MTV to boost ratings. Either way most people think the way Kanye behaved was rude, and people will hold this against him for a while. Remember this wasn't an award for who was the best singer, or even for who sold more albums. It was an award for Best Female Video.

Score one for the white folks Taylor!!!

Suepastarr: I am not even a fan of Beyonce, nor Kanye...but I will tell you that placing Beyonce in a category with Taylor Swift-- is, again...like facing-off a Jonas Brother against Eddie Van Halen for best guitarist--the comparison is laughable. That was Kanye's point; he may have been wrong in the way, how, and when, he said it, but he was right in saying it--not as an attack against Taylor Swift, but as it was meant, as an attack on MTV...and the music industry, for placing a lite-weight act against an extreme...and elite...pro, there is not one industry pro who didn't know that award was bought--they just chose to look the other way, because buying undeserved honors, and payola, is the way of the industry. Kanye, just exposed the wrong people, at the wrong time; they have invested too much money in Taylor Swift to allow their investment to be exposed now. She has a vocal pitch problem...sings in the nasal, and monotone, and is near-out of key, and she won an award over Beyonce??? Please? That is the reason why you saw more open industry rage over Kanye saying that he likes one video over another, than when Chris Brown beat Rihanna...the night before the Grammys--in an attempt to kill her (???), the industry didn't want its dirty little secret exposed, hence Kanye was made to look like some threatening murderer in tone, while Chris Brown was, demonized, a lot less for his actions...in trying to kill a woman??? Oh, the hypocrisy...and cowardice of Kanye's critics!!! Where were these same people when it came time to stand-up for Rihanna??? They collectively had nothing to say!!!
3:14PM 09/19/09 Zippy
Mssue48219: Actually, Chris Brown was quoted as saying "I'm going to kill you" to Rihanna. Trust me, I am a martial artist...by those pictures I saw of her, I can tell you for a fact, he was trying to do just that--kill her. You didn't hear people like 50 Cent coming to Rihanna's aid...or Pitbull, or Shakira, or Katy Perry, all who came out to blast Kanye. Why??? Because, they are cowards who don't fear Kanye, but none of them was brave enough to bad mouth the real villain, that being Chris Brown. So what if Kanye like one video over another??? No one was beaten, threatened, or was the target of attempted murder!!! But Rihanna was the target of attempted murder, and a brutal beating, and the industry and the media tip-toed all around it like scared cowards--and that is the story that should be grabbing the headlines, not this!!! Black girl gets beaten to within an inch of her life, well, it's okay...but white girl is told her video isn't as good as someone else's and Kanye gets death threats for it...and threats of boycotts on his music--same with Chris Brown, but non of these stars dared to blast Chris Brown, most only gave words of support to him. Again...that should be the story, here!!!

I dont care much for Jay Z but I have to agree w/ him on this one. It wasnt the country awards so like Taylor, I was shocked they called her over all the talented females that work hard to win these awards in pop, etc. MTV is known for being bias in there awards thats y most entertainers appreciate & celebrate winning People Choice Awards more than anything. Kanye didnt know B was getting the best video award & just spoke his mind before thinking..aint nothing wrong w/ keepin it real. Although it was rude, I know it wasnt anything personal towards Taylor but instead directed at MTV. I didnt even know who she was till it happened, now shes a household name so it worked out 4 her!

Zippy, I want to start off by saying everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Don't get my wrong I love Beyonce, but her video was kinda boring. I've been in dance for over 20 years and I respect that she can dance, but that's all she did in her video, and they shot it at different angles. Kinda boring, I didn't even like the outfits. Taylor had a story line in her video which made it more interesting. But hey that's just my opinion. Honestly, this isn't an issue over who has the best video, it's about one's actions and the concequence that result from those actions.
5:40AM 09/19/09 mssue48219
This is to Zippy first the Chris and Rihianna situation was just important to everyone as the taylor and kanye. this is september they ordeal happen in feburary and people took it very serious. and for you to use the word murder is a bit too much. now for you to say taylor is the lesser of the two yeah you may be rught in your opinion but my opinion she is just as good as beyonce, being that she only been out since 2006 she has out sold beyonce and everone who put out a album in 2008 so she is just as good as the next one. and for kanye to act like he did was very unprofessional and not only that this was not the first time he acted like an a hole and probably wont be the last.

Oh, and Jay-Z, who refers to himself as God (Hova...short for Jehovah) is no expert on character. Blasphemous!!!
4:16AM 09/19/09 myholly787
He needs to put down his very stereotypical bottle of Hennessy Cognac and get a life. He should have been charged for the illegal act of walking the street with an open container (he was scurrying up and down the red carpet with his bottle...swigging away) just like any normal person would have been. He constantly exhibits appalling behaviour....but never has to answer for it! I hope Papa Joe Jackson's dentures ended up floating in his Hennessy after he offered him a swig inside the event! Disgusting!!!

Of course Jay-Z wants us to move on, he is selling product with this guy. I too have to laugh at the "as he matures" line. He is an attention addict and will continue to dish out the bad behavior.

All these celebraties and news anchors have come-out to verbally attack Kanye West for being rude, but have you noticed, most all of them, to a person, had little to nothing to say against Chris Brown for beating Rihanna to within an inch of her life??? These people are all a bunch of hypocrites and cowards!!! Kanye simply said that he prefered one video over another, that is all---his attack was on MTV, and the music industry as a whole, for giving a win to a lessor talent, than the obvious favorite. Comparing Taylor Swift to Beyonce, is like the equivalent of one of the Jonas Brothers...as compared to Eddie Van Halen...there is no comparison, and that was Kanye's point; one poorly spoken, but true. The awards nomination, and win-- and presentation process, is horribly flawed, and suspect here, at best. One wonders if the award was bought? I ask anyone who dislikes Kanye's words to look at both nominated videos--that of Beyonce, and that of Taylor Swift...which should both be up at You Tube. If you can honestly say that Swift had the better video, and has the better song, performance, and vocalization...then you can say Kanye was wrong--now, his tactics may have been rude, but that is the heart of Rock 'N Roll and Rap...being a rebel, and fighting against, and exposing, the system--as run by 60 years old plus men. I find it interesting that so many musicians have sold-out to the "Corporate Rock and Rap" sponsored system...enough to rail against Kanye for being rude to Taylor Swift, while forgetting to have the balls to condemn Chris Brown for viciously beating, and attempting to murder Rihanna??? Now that is the question that the fans, the media, and the industry...need to be asking themselves--forget about Kanye, and Taylor Swift for a moment--where were these cowards to stand-up for Rihanna when she needed it--when she needed them???!!! Answer: Nowhere to be found--and that is the true...scandal here!!!

"As he matures" He's 35 years old...
9:46PM 09/18/09 suepastarr
Jay-Z basically ownes Kanye, that's why he's sticking up for him. Bottom line, every artist, songwriter, producer, whatever, is passionate about what they do. That doesn't give them a right to be rude, and it doesnt give them a right to do whatever they want, whenever they want. Someone needs to put Kanye in his place. He thinks he's better than everybody else. What he needs to realize is no matter how great you are someone out there is always greater than you.

i think him continuing to use his mothers death for an excuse for all his behaviors, is doing her an extreme affront. She would neither approve of this behavior, nor say its her fault by dying. What a cop out. The worst kind of one I can think of. She doesnt deserve to be brought into his bad behaviors at all. Certainly not at this length of time.
0:30PM 09/18/09 maxie
Since Taylor has forgiven him I think it's time to move on. Kanye will have to deal with these fits of entitlement he seems to have. Hopefully he will learn from this last outburst. It shouldn't and won't hurt his career. With any luck maybe he'll stop drinking so much and perhaps get some counceling. I don't think he's ever dealt with the death of his mother.
