Kanye West. biography
Born on June 8, 1977, in Atlanta, Georgia, Kanye Omari West dropped out of college to chase his musical dream, collaborating on tracks for Jay-Z while working on his own career.
In 2004, Kanye West released his debut album The College Dropout, which sold 2.6 million copies and earned Kanye his first Grammy Award for Best Rap Album in 2005. His pursuing albums had similar success, but Kanye’s outrageous behavior and comments have elevated him to celebrity status, shadowing his talent.
After his parents divorced when he was three, his mother Donda West, who supported them as an English professor, raised Kanye on Chicago’s South Side. He attended Chicago State University for one year before moving to New York in 2001 to start his dream career as a musician. He landed his first job producing songs for rapper Jay-Z’s album The Blueprint, which sold more than 430,000 copies in its first week. Respected artists, including singer Beyoncé and rapper Ludacris, immediately recognized Kanye’s talent and hired him as their producer. While producing tracks for the stars, Kanye worked on his own demo and eventually landed a deal in 2002 with Jay-Z’s label Roc-A-Fella Records.
Ensuing a long recording session in Los Angeles, Kanye fell asleep behind the wheel and was entangled in a head-on-collision that resulted in a badly fractured jaw. Although his jaw was wired shut, Kanye continued to work on his debut album The College Dropout. Released in 2004, the album sold 2.6 million copies and earned Kanye both the Grammy for Best Rap Album and Best Rap Song (“Jesus Walks”). He gained equal success with Late Registration (2005), which resulted in three Grammy Awards for Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song (“Diamonds from Sierra Leone”) and Best Rap Solo Performance (“Gold Digger”).
The awards continued to pour in following the release of Kanye’s next album Graduation (2007), earning Kanye three additional Grammy Awards for Best Rap Song (“Good Life”), Best Rap Solo Performance (“Stronger”) and Best Rap Album of the Year. He also attained a Grammy for Best Rap Performance (by a Duo or group) for his collaboration with Common on the track “Southside.”
On November 10, 2007, Donda West died of surgical complications, stemming from a tummy-tuck and breast reduction. Recovering from a tremendous loss, Kanye released his album 8080s & Heartbreak (2008), which topped the charts with the hit singles “Heartless” and “Amazing.” He later won the Best Rap/Sung Collaboration Grammy for his duet with Estelle, titled “American Boy,” and Best Performance by a Duo or Group for his work with Jay-Z, T.I. and Lil Wayne.
In 2009, Kanye released Good Morning Good Night: Dusk and Good Morning Good Night: Dawn on the same day. That same year, Kanye arrived at the MTV Music Video Awards drunk and with a bottle of Hennessey in hand. His destruction occurred when country singer Taylor Swift won the Best Female Video Award for “You Belong With Me,” over Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It).” After Taylor accepted the moon man, Kanye ran up on-stage and grabbed the mike from her, slurring, “Yo Taylor, I'm really happy for you, I'll let you finish, but Beyoncé has one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time!" Taylor, the whole world, and even Beyoncé were shocked and disappointed in his outburst. Taylor had dreamt about winning a moon man since she was younger. Although Kanye later apologized to Taylor and fans everywhere, he was soon coined as a celebrity with no filter. The media and fans started focusing on his behavior, waiting for his next outburst, rather than his music.
Kanye returned to the music scene in November 2010 with the release of his fifth studio album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, featuring the hit singles “All of the Lights,” “Power,” “Monster” and “Runaway.”
In Summer 2012, Kanye revived his image by releasing his album Cruel Summer, which featured 22 artists, including Wu-Tang member Raekwon, Ghostface, Big Sean, Rick Ross, and Jay-Z. The album was well-received by fans and critics due to Kanye’s passion for production quality and those around him rather than his headlining, erratic behavior.
In June 2013, Kanye was reunited with his dominance over the world of hip-hop after his sixth studio album Yeezus was released to critical acclaim.
