Missy Franklin, the 17-year-old American swimming sensation, made our day by winning gold in the 100-meter backstroke – then Justin Bieber made her life with a simple tweet:
heard @FranklinMissy is a fan of mine. now im a fan of hers too. CONGRATS on winning GOLD! #muchlove
This was Franklin’s first individual medal, and it’s gold. But she already won a bronze for the 4x100 freestyle relay.
The 100-backstroke race came just 15 minutes after a qualifying race for another event (she made the cut on that one too), and her time of 58.33 set an American record.
Hailing from the now infamous Aurora, Colorado, Franklin has indicated that she wants to dedicate all her efforts to the victims of the movie theater massacre.
And for another heart-warming tidbit, she’s bucked sponsorship offers as they would disqualify her from competing with her high school team.
I mean, cute right?
Speaking of cute, Justin Bieber - singer, songwriter, dancer, boyfriend, heartthrob, philanthropist, musical mentor and budding talent scout - seems to want to add another role to his resume: Olympic cheerleader.
On Monday, he had a Twitter exchange (this one at her prompting) with Canadian gymnast Dominique Pegg, who asked the famous Believer for luck, he naturally complied.
Though Franklin had publicly proclaimed her fandom for the Biebs, she was blindsided by his message. About an hour later, she replied:
“@justinbieber: heard @FranklinMissy is a fan of mine. now im a fan of hers too. CONGRATS on winning GOLD! #muchlove” I just died! Thankyou!
A perfect response. But don’t die Missy, you’re just getting started! And we can’t wait to watch! Good luck in the rest of The Games!
