Thanks to genealogists at Ancestry.com, it’s just been discovered that Justin Bieber, Ryan Gosling, and Avril Lavigne are actually all distant cousins. Not only that, but Bieber is distantly related to Celine Dion as well.
I guess "celebrity" runs in the family.
What are the odds, that the prince of Pop, the Queen of Ballads, the Sexiest Man Alive, and uh, Avril Lavigne are all from the same gene pool?
This weird family link goes back to some of Quebec’s earliest settlers nearly 400 years ago.
“It was a very pleasant surprise,” says Ancestry.com researcher Michelle Ercanback.
Bieber and Gosling are 11th cousins, once removed. Bieber and Lavigne are 12th cousins.
Back in the 1600s, a couple by the names of Mathurin Roy and Marguerite Bire married and had kids, and Justin, Ryan, and Avril all descended from those two.
As for Bieber and Celine, they are 10th cousins, three times removed also linked to a different French couple from Quebec that married in the early 1600s.
All this star power in one batch of cousins, makes us wonder if there’s such a thing as a “superstar gene.” But researchers say these links aren’t “sufficient to point to existence of a superstar gene.”
