Joseph Leonard Gordon-Levitt was born in Los Angeles, California on February 17, 1981, to Jane Gordon and Dennis Levitt. Acting from an early age, Joseph Gordon-Levitt started his acting career by appearing in a play when he was only four-years-old followed by an astray of commercials, including a peanut butter ad at the age of 6.
Gordon-Levitt was able to bypass the Hollywood struggle to transition from a child star to an established adult actor by landing a major role in the alien comedy 3rd Rock From the Sun (1996) as an alien teenager. The show ran for six seasons, but Gordon-Levitt chose to have his lead role turn into a guest star so he could attend Columbia University in New York City, where he would later study French literature.
After leaving Hollywood, Gordon-Levitt returned to the film capital of the world, determined to erase his past and establish himself as a serious actor. He searched for challenging, Indie characters and landed a variety of roles, including a street hustler in Mysterious Skin (2004), a teenage detective in Brick (2005) and a criminal in The Lookout (2007). Gordon-Levitt's career then took off when he was cast as the lead in the independent romantic comedy 500 Days of Summer (2009) opposite Zooey Deschanel. His portrayal of a young man who falls in love with a woman who doesn't believe in love earned him a Golden Globe Award nomination.
In 2010, the name Gordon-Levitt began gaining recognition after he joined the cast of Christopher Nolan's science fiction film Inception, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. He went on to give a critically acclaimed performance in 50/50 (2011) playing Tom, a young cancer patient, alongside Seth Rogen.
Gordon-Lewitt accomplished one of his life dreams in 2012 when he was cast to play a Gotham City police officer in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Night Rises. He later worked with renowned director Steven Spielberg on the biopic Abraham Lincoln (2012), playing Lincoln's son Robert and starring Daniel Day-Lewis as Lincoln. In that same year, he scored a leading role in Premium Rush (2012) and Looper (2012), in which he plays Bruce Willis' younger self.
Gordon-Lewitt's most recent project include, the comedy Don Jon' (2013), a film about a porn addicted Don Juan-type attempting to change his selfish tendencies, starring Scarlett Johansson and Julianne Moore. In addition to the action thriller Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014) alongside Jessica Alba.
