Jonathan Rhys Meyers was hospitalized yesterday after reportedly having overdosed on pills suggesting that he had attempted to take his own life.
The troubled star has a history of alcohol abuse, violence and recurring stints in rehab.
Rhys Meyers first checked into rehab in 2005 at the Promises facility in California for alcohol abuse. He has been in and out of rehab 5 times since 2005.
Of his numerous stays in rehab a source tells People, “He just really wants to get better, this has been an ongoing battle for him.”
In 2007, he was arrested in Dublin Airport and charged with public drunkenness and in breach of the peace. His run-ins with the police didn’t end there. In 2009, he was arrested after allegedly attacking a number of staff at a bar in Paris and threatening to kill them.
In 2010 it was reported that Rhys Meyers was banned for life from flying on United Airlines due to drunken belligerence and “disruptive behavior” and using the “n-word.” He allegedly verbally and physically abused an employee who is now asking for $15,000 in damages from Rhys Meyers.
At the time of this altercation his girlfriend, make-up heiress Reena Hammer, reportedly told him, “Check into rehab or I’m dumping you.”
In 2006, Rhys-Meyers and Hammer got into a loud argument, neighbors complained on suspicion that there was domestic violence involved and the two were arrested.
Rhys-Meyers tried to clear up the rumors by saying, “No we didn’t punch each other…we were having a bit of a screaming match and the neighbors called the cops because they didn’t know who was screaming.”
