Jordin Sparks Defends Purity Rings

Russell Brand was the host of the VMAs this year and he made some funny jokes, but it seems like there were some that also offended people. Russell picked on purity rings and the Jonas Brothers and that joke didn’t seem to go so well with some people in the audience.

When Jordin Sparks hit the stage to introduce T.I.’s performance, she took the time to speak out against Brand’s joke.

"I just have one thing to say about promise rings. It's not bad to wear a promise ring," Sparks said, "because not everybody – guy or girl – wants to be a slut."

Good job Jordin!

Jordin got a loud cheer from the crowd and seemed to be relieved. She must have been offended because she too wears a purity ring. It must have been pretty bad if Brand came back on stage later on and apologized for his comments.

"I didn't meant to take it lightly," the host said. "I don't want to piss off teenage fans." He then joked, "Promise rings, I'm well up for it. [But] a bit of sex, it never hurt anybody."

Do you guys think Russell went too far with his jokes, or did he make you laugh?

he went to far, also i hate celebs telling us who to vote for. they should keep their political opinions to themselves. i would like a Black president, but not just because he is black, and that's what Russell Brand is about. lets have Condo as president, and its not just because she is Black

i think he is a jerk! I am all for democrats, but he has no rights to talk about our political leaders that way as he himself is not even an american. but then again, we invited this person to come host our show here, so who is really to blame. I don't know where they found him and why him?!?!? maybe this is how they wanted it to be? Jordin served him right.

I thought he was funny but I understand where Jordin was coming from. However, I think that her comment was incredibly rude because it implied that if you don't wear a purity ring, or if you have remarital sex, you're a slut.

Russell Brand is a loser with cracked hair leaking into his brain. not all guys who are good in bed need to jump on the first thing that hits him. no doubt that brand would need to jump a sheep if there were no humans around. i'd rather know that the sex i had was the sex i really wanted.

jordin's comments were extremely ignorant and immature. i'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt and say her comment was poorly worded because the way she said it, everyone without a purity ring is a slut. also, she must have forgotten that russell is a comedian, so i'm not quite sure what she was expecting. also, to the person who said that russell wants barack to win because he is black, you are taking his joke too literally and seriously. Also, condo is horrible. Lastly, you don't have to be American to have an opinion on who the next president is going to be, go read a history book and see how American foreign policies affect the world and then maybe you'll have a better understanding on the world's concern over who your leader is going to be.

uh,i never said she couldn't say what she wanted, so please don't make it sound like i did. That, or you clearly have no idea what I said. Fyi, freedom of speech is not only found in your american country, dear. Perhaps if you opened up a map and dared to look outside your country, you'd see others as well. Anyhow, to put it simply, and at your comprehension level, what she said was stupid.

Russell Brand was completely out of line. American or not, he had no business peddling his politics or morality to the audience. He knew that most of his listeners would be young people. Why would he choose such inappropriate topics to joke about? If he is a good comedian, he can find plenty of other things to joke about that would not be offensive to much of his audience. I am proud of Jordin for speaking up at a time when most people are afraid to take a stand. She not only let Russell Brand know, but also the young people in the audience, that there is an alternative to teen sex. (I think she might have worded it better, but still, props to her for standing up!)

I hardly see how wearing a ring is an alternative to teen sex. A ring isn't going to stop a thing and it is ridiculous for anyone to think it will. His jokes were just that, jokes. The VMAs are known for jokes about the nominees that go a little too far. Who cares? There's nothing wrong with saving yourself for marriage, but there is also nothing wrong with not making that choice.

She does not mean to offend...i understand her ...what she means...she was directing slut @ brand...and she is not saying that those that dont wear purity ring is a slut...man you american so funny...cant read between the line...The point is...good on her for standing up for what she believes in and that is a good role model for teenagers....GO JORDIN!!!!!

ok so i thought what Jordin said was good i mean brand did talk about sex like 98% of the show. i think a promise ring is a good thing. i think jordin represented her fellow purity ring wearers very well
