John Sydney McCain was born on August 29, 1936 at a U.S. Naval Air Station in Panama. His father was stationed there at the time. McCain followed his father into the military. He graduated from the Naval Academy in 1958 and became a naval aviator.
McCain was shot down and taken prisoner in 1967 during the Vietnam War. He was tortured and held captive until 1973. After retiring from the Navy in 1981, McCain threw his hat in the political ring. He was elected the House of Representatives in 1982 with the help of his wife Cindy's family influence. After two terms in office, he successfully ran for the U.S. Senate in 1986. A few years later, McCain was implicated in Savings and Loan scandal involving Charles Keating but was exonerated of any serious wrongdoing.
Over the years, McCain has co-sponsored many important pieces of legislation, specifically campaign finance reform. He ran for president in 2000 but lost a heated primary with George W. Bush. In 2008, McCain captured the Republican nomination for president and tapped Alaska governor Sarah Palin as his running mate. McCain is engaged in a heated campaign with Democratic nominee Barack Obama.
