Joe Truett Simpson was born on February 18, 1958 and is the father of singers Ashlee and Jessica Simpson. As a youth minister at the Heights Baptist Church in Richardson, Texas, Joe introduced Jessica to the world of singing, even striking up a record deal with a Christian label. Although the deal fell through, Joe continued to help Jessica pursue her music career by persuading his mother Joyce to cover the cost of her demo album and personally selling the copies while Jessica was on tour with the Christian Youth Conference. His persistency finally paid off when one of Jessica's demos landed in the lap of Columbia Record's Tommy Motolla and offered her a record deal.
Once Jessica signed the recording contract, Joe took the managerial position and went on to pitch the idea of the reality show Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica (2003-2005), which focused around Jessica and pop singer Nick's marriage. The show debuted on MTV and was a huge commercial success with an average of 1.4 million viewers per episode. Working off his reality show high, Joe became Ashlee and her one time boyfriend Ryan Cabrerr's manager, followed by his collaboration on Ashlee's reality show The Ashlee Simpson Show (2003 - 2004).
Despite helping his daughters reach stardom, Joe is most known for his questionable comments and managerial decisions concerning the two. He is reportedly responsible for Ashlee's lip-syncing disaster on SNL in 2004, in which she walked off stage when the wrong track was played. When asked about Jessica's sexy presence in a 2004 GQ magazine interview, Joe replied, "Jessica never tries to be sexy. She just is sexy. If you put her in a T-shirt or you put her in a bustier, she's sexy in both. She's got double D's! You can't cover those suckers up!"
In 2005, Joe created the recording label Papa Joe Records and the E! Network reality show Filthy Rich: Cattle Drive (2005), which was a financial bust. He then cashed in on the success of Jessica's first film The Dukes of Hazzard (2005) by launching a chain of barbeque-style diners, called Daisy Dukes. He later produced Jessica's second film Employee of the Month (2006), which opened to dismal reviews.
Joe's real problems arrived in August 2012, when he was arrested at a DUI checkpoint in Sherman Oaks for blowing a .12 on the Breathalyzer test. Although Joe maintained his innocence, a judge ultimately charged him with two misdemeanor counts of Driving Under the Influence and ordered him not to touch alcohol while out on bail.
Is Joe Simpson Gay?
Rumors that Joe Simpson was gay ignited when the world was informed of his divorce from Tina Simpson in October 2012. According to court documents, Tine filed divorce papers in September, citing "discord or conflict of personalities" as the reason for their split. Joe quickly responded to Tina's divorce papers, requesting she doesn't receive a dime.
If that wasn't bad enough, a family friend reportedly told The National Enquirer that Joe came out of the closet to his family and has a 20-something year old boy-toy on the side. The family source went on to say:
"Joe got the family together about two months ago and came out of the closet," an insider divulged. "He told them that he'd tried to continue in his marriage to Tina, but he couldn't go on any longer and deny the fact that he had these feelings for men."
The rumor has neither been confirmer nor denied, but at least Joe has someone to keep him company through the rigorous divorce process. Just a rumor though...
