It's hard to imagine that J.K. Rowling once thought about suicide, considering how great her life is now. But things weren't always rosy for the Harry Potter author, who battled deep depression for years. Before she became famous for Harry, she was a single mom living on welfare. She had just gotten divorced from her husband, and her friends had to pay her security deposit on her apartment.
Imagine that! And now the woman is worth billions. J.K. says what got her through her depression was her daughter, and she couldn't bear to have her see her mother living like this. She recently talked with a student newspaper about the importance of seeking help, and that it's nothing to feel ashamed about.
"The thing that made me go for help was probably my daughter. She was something that earthed me, grounded me, and I thought, this isn't right, this can't be right, she cannot grow up with me in this state. The funny thing is, I have never been remotely ashamed of having been depressed. Never. I think I'm abnormally shameless on that account because what's to be ashamed of?"
