To celebrate the 24th annual National Coming Out Day, we’ve rounded up those celebs that came out of the closet this year.
Whether it was a grand “coming out” or simply the media realized what everyone’s already known for a long time (Aka Anderson Coopers “non” coming out) let’s celebrate those brave LGBT individual that came out this year.
Matt Bomer: The 34-year-old “White Collar” star didn’t necessarily come out of the closet, but he did thank his partner Simon Halls when he picked up an award for his humanitarian work earlier this year. He said, “I’d really especially like to thank my beautiful family: Simon, Kit, Walker, Henry.” He didn’t necessarily come out, but everyone took this speech as his “coming out” moment and kind of shoved him out of the closet.
Jim Parsons: The “Big Bang Theory” actor has been with his partner Todd Spiewak for 10 years and die-hard “Big Bang” fans always knew he was gay, but it wasn’t until New York Times writer Patrick Healy confirmed it in an article about Jim Parsons that the world caught on. Patrick wrote of Jim, “Mr. Parsons is gay and in a 10-year relationship.” Whether or not he wanted the announcement, Jim was out and proud.
Anderson Cooper: Anderson Cooper revealed that he came out in high-school, but since he’s been a public figure, he’s never once mentioned the “G” word. What I’m saying is, he’s not exactly a Neil Patrick Harris. He came out again (can you come out twice?) over the summer, saying, “The fact is, I’m gay, I always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud.”
Frank Ocean: Frank Ocean’s coming out moment was a huge deal, because he was the first mainstream black hip-hop artist to ever publicly come out of the closet. He came out just before his debut solo album so it made for excellent publicity, but it was also completely honest. He wrote on Tumblr, “4 summers ago, I met somebody. I was 19. He was too. We spent that summer, and the summer after, together.”
Amber Heard: Actress Amber Heard only “came out” because she was rumored to be dating Johnny Depp earlier this year. But the Johnny Depp rumors fell flat because we all found out that Amber had been with her girlfriend since 2010. But wait, doesn’t that mean she came out in 2010? Probably, but the gossip world didn’t find out till this year, so there.
