Jim Carrey: Longtime Prozac Users Never Get To The Problem

December 16, 2008

Jim Carrey has a pulled a Tom Cruise and has made a public statement about prescription drug use. He appeared on Larry King yesterday and told him that anti-depression drugs don’t work for the disease, which Carrey says he’s been battling his entire life.

We had no idea Jim Carrey suffered from depression! But that is common for many comedians to be depressed, and use humor as an outlet. On LKL, Carrey said, "At the risk of like opening up the whole Tom Cruise Prozac argument, you know, I don’t disagree in many ways. I think Prozac and things like that are very valuable to people for short periods of time. But I believe if you’re on them for an extended period of time, you never get to the problem. You never get to see what the problem is, because everything is just kind of OK. And so, you don’t deal. And people deal when they get desperate."

So rather than use Prozac, Carrey revealed what he uses as a remedy for his depression. Revealing what works for him, Carrey adds, "It is vitamins. But it’s also certain elements of the brain like Tyrosine and hydroxytryptophan that they’re treating depression with now. It is a natural substance that’s in your brain…This actually creates dopamine and creates serotonin - a wonderful thing. It’s amazing. I’m going to talk a lot about it in the near future."

Well at least Carrey didn’t criticize Larry in the process, like Tom did to Matt Lauer! It is an interesting topic, and we know a lot of people agree with the two of about the overuse of prescription drugs. So maybe Tom and Jim can get together and write a book about it, or make a documentary to put their passion about the subject to use.

While I do commend Jim for discussing his experiences with depression, I also agree that insight can only get some people 'so far'. This is especially pertinent for those people who have depression due to biological causes; if you're biologically affected by depression then it is not as easy to 'get to the root of the problem'.

Unless you are bipolor, drugs just put off the real problem. Negative thoughts, Living in the past, fear of the future. All factors in depression. Put your trust in a higher power(God,Christ) Its the only way to get over yourself.

I can take about 5 minutes of him, drugged or not, than I just have to change the channel.

Wow everybody has talked about the over prescribing of Prozac along with many other drugs, as far back as I can remember. More natural methods including vitamins have also been used for quite a while now. It was Tom Cruise that pushed it further underground, almost delegitimizing it, since he didn't really seem like he knew what he was talking about. These Scientologists really seem behind the times, if they think they discovered it or introduced it to the public. They ought to poke their heads out of the celebrity centers once and a while, and look at what's going on in the real world before going off on ignorant, insulting tirades.
