For your daily dose of testosterone, check out the trailer for The Bourne Legacy -- the fourth movie based on the fourth book in the Jason Bourne series – starring Jeremy Renner, but minus Jason Bourne himself, Matt Damon.
Directed by Tony Gilroy, who also wrote this screenplay as well as the screenplays for the first three films, addressed concerns regarding the concept of Bourne-sans-Bourne to Entertainment Weekly in 2010:
“The easiest way to think of it is an expansion or a reveal. Jason Bourne will not be in this film, but he’s very much alive. What happened in the first three films is the trigger for what happens. I’m building a legend and an environment and a wider conspiracy.”
Not to entirely dismiss Bourne royalty, no one is ruling out a possible Damon return in the future, but the actor has vowed to avoid association unless Paul Greengrass, director of the last two films, is brought back into the mix.
While there are repeated references to Bourne in the plot of Legacy, and the characters of seasoned faves Joan Allen and Albert Finney do re-surface -- ultimately things change.
Let’s move on.
Edward Norton and Rachel Weisz are new additions to the line-up, and if they had to make us forget about Matt Damon, Jeremy Renner (and his shirtlessness) is a more than solid (hot) choice.
While there’s no doubt that (the still sort of under the radar but solid box office gold) Renner will continue to be a badass for mass consumption, we can only hope that the Bourne franchise will carry on. That's because there’s five more books. Five.
But as far as this latest installment goes, judging from the trailers alone, the new “environment” and “wider conspiracy,” are going to be nothing short of awesome. The end.
