Jennifer Hudson is heading back to the big screen. And her first role in over a year is going to be a big one—she’ll be playing the powerful role of Nelson Mandela’s wife Winnie.
According to Variety, the film will begin production in May in South Africa in both Cape Town, and Robben Island, where Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years.
The film will portray Winnie as the dedicated wife and mother who supported her husband and was even imprisoned herself for campaigning for his release. “I was compelled and moved when I read the script,” Hudson said. “Winnie Mandela is a complex and extraordinary woman and I’m honored to be the actress asked to portray her. This is a powerful part of history that should be told.”
Jennifer is also expected to sing the movie’s theme song.
