Even Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey can’t pull the series out of its rut.
Following last week’s Season 12 premiere that yielded the worst numbers in the show’s premiere history, it appears that “American Idol” is on its way out the door. According to Jennifer Hudson, who earned a finalist spot in the third season of the show, that moment couldn’t come soon enough.
The Oscar-winning actress recently spoke out about her feelings on the show to Celebuzz.com. Here message to producers: End it already.
“Everything has its time,” she said. “I think it should just allow itself to go out on top… and gracefully.”
Not that she doesn’t respect her roots. In fact, the 31-year-old stunner recognizes “Idol” as a pivotal show in television history.
“American Idol changed the face of television,” she said. “So, not everyone can say that. And, it’s always been a phenomenon. I’m proud to have come from American Idol, so I just say, go out on top.”
Still, Hudson seems to have a point, as all good things must come to an end. And host Ryan Seacrest could probably use a day off, anyway.
Despite transparent ploys by FOX to build “drama” between Minaj and Carey, ratings for last week’s premiere fell 19 percent to that of last season, proving that fans have lost interest in the show’s predictable format.
“Idol” returns again this week on Wednesday at 8/7 c. You can also catch Hudson’s appearance on NBC’s “Smash.” Season 2 premieres Tuesday, February 5 at 9/8 c.
