John Mayer and Jennifer Aniston may have split three years ago, but according to the rumor mill he’s giving her the ultimate breakup gift: a hit single.

Remember when his song, “Your Body Is A Wonderland” was supposedly inspired by his ex Jennifer Love Hewitt? He nixed that on "VH1 Storytellers," saying he wrote it about his first girlfriend when he was 14.

Well his new song “Shadow Days” off his ‘Born and Raised’ album may be about another famous ex—Jennifer Aniston.

According to an US Weekly source, “It really took him a long time to get over her. He really loved her a lot."

With lyrics like “I found myself in pieces on my hotel floor” and “I never meant her harm,” no doubt he’s feeling some guilt over somebody!

Mayer and Aniston originally dated in 2008, but the high profile relationship crashed and burned. Several times. Mayer even held an odd, impromptu press conference where he announced to the world, “I ended a relationship to be alone because I don't want to waste somebody's time if something's not right.”

After that, Aniston, 43, went on to date actor Justin Theroux, whom she’s with now. And Mayer, after a string of celebrity exes that included Jessica Simpson, appears to be keeping a low profile for the moment, at least romantically.

In his music video for “Shadow Days,” Mayer drives along lonely country roads and strums his guitar out in the desert at sunset. No women in sight.
The source says, "He wrote the song as a farewell letter knowing [Jen] would hear it. Ultimately he's done a lot of self reflection though and it he realizes they weren't right for each other."

In the song, Mayer croons, “I finally learned to let it go.” We’re sure his exes wished he would learn to stop talking about them.
