10 Things You Didn't Know About 'The Artist' Star Uggie The Dog

Talk about an Oscar snub. Jonah Hill gets Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role, and Uggie the Dog gets nothing? Can Jonah Hill roll on his belly? Can Jonah Hill play dead? Okay, he probably can. But I bet he can’t do it like Uggie.

We couldn’t overlook Uggie’s role in The Artist, mostly because he’s so doggone (sorry) cute. Here are a few things you might not know about the Academy’s biggest snub, Uggie the Dog.

He’s a Senior Citizen: Uggie is 10 years old, which is 70 in dog years. He looks great for his age.

He Was Made For Show Business: Uggie’s trainer, Omar Von Muller, says “[Uggie] was just born to be a showman.” I say he hosts the next Academy Awards.

He Likes Blondes: Hollyscoop interviewed Uggie at the 2012 Golden Globes, and he took quite a liking to Hollyscoop’s own Diana Madison.

Look out, ladies! Uggie got game.

He’s From Florida: The Jack Russell terrier was only one year old when his Florida family gave him away. He was reportedly very rambunctious. Someone should’ve told the family that HE’S A PUPPY.

He Auditioned for Michael Hazanavicius: How nerve-wracking! Uggie had an intimate audition for the director and a few producers from The Artist. “They were very impressed, but we didn’t get hired on the spot, his other trainer, Sarah Clifford, said. “I had heard that they looked at a couple of other dogs. After several weeks we were awarded the film—I was thrilled.”

He’s Been In Other Movies: This ain’t Uggie’s first rodeo. He played Queenie in the Reese Witherspoon movie, Water for Elephants.

He’s a Method Actor: Uggie really gets into character. While shooting a scene in which a character turns a gun on himself: “Uggie was barking and pulling on the pant leg, but what they didn't show in the scene was Uggie actually reached up and tried to pull the gun out of his hand," Clifford said.

He Has An Entourage: Uggie travels with a pack. There were apparently three dogs on set of The Artist at all times, including Uggie’s friends Dude and Dash. "When you're doing multiple takes like that, for long hours, you don't want to tire out the dog," Clifford says.

He Has a Bad Habit: And no, it’s not smoking. “Uggie’s a snorer,” Clifford revealed. “Very loudly, actually.”

He’s Thrilled To Be On the Red Carpet: Hollyscoop asked Uggie how it feels to be on the red carpet.
“Arf! Arf!” Uggie told Hollyscoop. And then he pretended to faint. Okay, so maybe we’re reading too much into it, but he seemed pretty happy.
