The release of Jay-Z’s next studio album Magna Carta Holy Grail is still a day away and it seems Blue Ivy Carter had an influence on the album. When talking about his 18-month-old girl, Jay said that he and Beyoncé still “marvel” at Blue.
In this video, Jay introduces one of Grail’s tracks, “Jay Z Blue,” holding back tears, his voice nearly breaking, as he explains its meaning to music producer Rick Rubin. Yes, it’s a hybrid commercial for the record and his partnership with Samsung, but the content is so strikingly intimate for 45 seconds you forget it’s an ad.
“It deals with, you know, my pop left when I was young, so he didn’t teach me how to be a man nor how to raise a child or treat a woman,” he said. “So, of course, my karma, the two things I needed I don’t have, right?”
“And I have a daughter,” he continued. “It’s the paranoia of not being a great dad.”
