Javier Angel Encinas Bardem was born on March 1, 1969, in Las Palmas, Canary Islands into a family of acting descent. Javier first gained stardom among the Spanish audience with his natural charm in sexually implicit movies, including the drama Las edades de Lulú (1990), the romance-comedy Jamón Jamón (1992) alongside Penélope Cruz and the comedy-drama Huevos de oro (1993) with Benicio Del Toro. He expanded his acting reach with dramatic roles in Días contados (1994) and the thriller El Detective y la muerte (1994), followed by a comedic performance in the romance-comedy Boca a boca (1995). He later went on to star in the drama Carne trémula (1997) alongside Penélope Cruz before making his English-language debut in horror film Perdita Durango (1997) and the romance-mystery Entre las piernas (1999).
Javier first gained international attention with his portrayal of the Cuban revolutionary Reinaldo Arenas, alongside Johnny Depp, in the biopic Before Night Falls (2000) in which he received the National Board of Review Award and the National Society of Film Critics' Award for Best Actor and became the first Spanish actor to be honored with an Academy Award nomination. The couple adamantly kept their relationship out of the public eye and stayed clear of any questions concerning their personal lives. Reportedly, when Cruz was asked to confirm their relationship, she said, "He's a friend and the best actor in the world."

Javier and Cruz secretly exchanged vows in a small, private ceremony at a friend's Bahamas home in July 2010. Cruz later gave birth to their son Leo Encinas Bardem at Los Angeles' Cedars Sinai Hospital on January 22, 2011.
