January, who plays a lead role as Jon Hamm’s wife, was informed recently that she was looking too skinny, and that the producers were not happy about it.
At the AMC Network party for the show last night, January told reporters, “I got told a couple of days ago that I look too skinny, and I was in trouble. I’m naturally pretty thin, so I’m trying.”
And by “trying,” that means January can pretty much eat whatever she wants. She says, “I eat whatever is at craft services. I’m a big eater. I’m from South Dakota, so meat, potatoes, carbs.”
The star notes that to maintain Mad Men’s early ‘60s look, in which women definitely had more meat on their bones, she and the other actresses are “encouraged NOT to work out. We want soft; we don’t want any muscle definition.”
Sounds like a dream job! Actresses in general are under so much scrutiny for their weight these days, that it’s shocking to hear the other side of the spectrum. It’s just one more reason Mad Men is one of the best shows on television.
The new season for Mad Men will start airing in August.
