Janet: It's Hard to Believe He's Passed

Janet Jackson
Janet Jackson is opening up for the first time since Michael’s death about how she’s dealing with the passing of her brother.

She spoke with Harper’s Bazaar in their upcoming issue, and says since June 25th she hasn’t been able to turn on the television.

Janet says, "People can have rhinoceros skin, but there's a point when something's going to hurt you. Not everyone is stone, stone. I haven't watched the news in weeks. I had to ask my chef, 'How's Obama doing?' I haven't read a newspaper. On top of that, [we've lost] a family member."

Janet tells the magazine that the last time she saw Michael was at a family gathering in May. She says, "We had so much fun that day. We kept calling each other after and saying how great it was."

She continues, "My brother is, I mean was... You have to forgive me, because it's really hard to believe he's passed."

But despite the anguish of losing her brother, Janet says she’s trying to stay focused on the future. She went back to work relatively quickly after his passing. She says, "I've been doing okay. Work helps focus all of that energy on something that is of value to you."

Janet also talked about her niece Paris’ speech at Michael’s memorial. She says, "I was really proud. People said to me that Michael's daughter speaking really gave them a sense of how he was as a father, in her words. Paris is incredibly smart; they are all so smart. She's a sweet girl. The kids are doing well. They're with all their cousins; that family love will keep them going."

I remember so well when my friend, Diana, called me up with the news that her brother had fallen off of a horse he was riding, fatally breaking his neck. This was in 1971. She been so glad just a few years before that his time in the service was up before he got shipped to Vietnam. I remember her coming into home ec class looking so happy and announcing that Bill was coming home! And, then, this. In 1986, her youngest child and I decorated Bill's grave on our way to Brown County, and Michelle said something like, "Mommy always cries when we visit Uncle Bill's grave, and I cry, too." Michelle had never met her uncle, just as I never got to meet Uncle Donald who lost a courageous battle with Bright's Disease in 1941--almost a dozen years before I was born. Sometimes, my 87 year old mom still tears up when she thinks about Uncle Donald. The grieving process is an ongoing thing until people get reunited with their loved ones.

The radio station just played the song "I'll be there", being sung by Mariah Carey, but I was only thinking of Michael when I was listening to it. That's my favourite song. Love you so much Michael, and always will.

She's being so strong. It must be so hard for her, and the family. Stay strong Janet. We loved Michael and love you all and will be keeping you all in our prayers. RIP sweet Michael!

I feel your pain Janet, I am so hurt about Michael's passing that I find myself listening to his music all day and night. Take care of yourself and Michael's children.
