The real-life criminal played by Jack Nicholson in Scorsese's Oscar-winning movie, The Departed, has been caught.
James "Whitey" Bulger was on the lam for sixteen years and has long been on the FBI's 10 Most Wanted List. Between this dude and Osama Bin Laden, we're barreling right through that list. USA! USA! There was also a $2 million reward for his capture. Someone just won the lottery.
Bulger faces charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, narcotics distribution, extortion and money laundering. He is due to appear in a Los Angeles courtroom on Thursday. Maybe he can high-five Lindsay on his way in.
At 81 years old, Bulger is linked to at least nineteen murders. Authorities found him after increased publicity on the investigation. A new national media campaign highlighted photos of Bulger's girlfriend. Bulger and Catherine Greig were living in a three-story, 28 unit apartment building.
The fugitive was arrested in the Santa Monica apartment building Wednesday evening, based on a tip prompted by the TV ads.
He headed "Winter Hill Gang" in Boston, where he was involved in "numerous murders committed from the early 1970s through the mid 1980s". He was once an FBI informant, but disappeared in 1995 after discovering he would be charged for his crimes.
