Jack Nicholson. biography
John Joseph Nicholson was born on April 22, 1937, in Neptune, New Jersey and moved to Los Angeles in 1954, where he started out as a gopher for the animation department of MGM Studios.
Jack’s good looks, however, soon captured the attention of MGM producer Joe Pasternak who helped him land an apprenticeship at The Players Ring Theater.
In 1958, Jack made his acting debut as Jimmy Wallace in the indie thriller The Cry Baby Killer. He then began appearing in low-budget horror flicks, including The Terror (1963) prior to earning his first Oscar nomination for his supportive role in the drama Easy Rider (1969).
Assuming the role of a past musical sensation in the drama Five Easy Pieces (1970), Jack added his first Oscar nomination for Best Actor to his resume. He obtained yet another Oscar nod in the same category for his role in the dark comedy The Last Detail (1973) as well as for his portrayal of private detective in the cult classic crime drama Chinatown (1974).
A year later, Jack’s progress was finally met with his first Academy Award for Best Actor stemming from his portrayal of a convict detained in a mental hospital in the award-winning drama One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975).
After starring in the critically acclaimed adaptation of Stephen King’s The Shining (1980), Jack continued pleasing audiences and critics with memorable performances in films such as Reds (1981), which led to an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor, Terms of Endearment (1983), The Witches of Eastwick (1987) and Batman (1989) as Joker.
Going into the 1990s, Jack’s celebrity status reached new heights when he starred in the courtroom drama A Few Good Men (1992) and the dramedy As Good As It Gets (1997), with the latter leading to his third Academy Award for Best Actor.
Also during this time, Jack began putting his comedic skills on display alongside other talented actors such as Glenn Close in Mars Attacks! (1996), Kathy Bates in About Schmidt (2002), Adam Sandler in Anger Management (2003) and Diane Keaton in Something’s Gotta Give (2003).
Following a Golden Globe nomination for his lead role in the Oscar-winning drama thriller The Departed (2006), Jack starred in the dramedies The Bucket List (2007) opposite Morgan Freeman and How Do You Know (2010) alongside Owen Wilson as well as Reese Witherspoon.
