The First Star to Turn Down ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Role

With a screenwriter and director finally attached, and the blessing of author E.L. James, the Fifty Shades of Grey film adaptation is slowly on its way towards production.

All it really needs now is the right stars to play the coveted characters of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele—and with all the latest traction, more industry heavyweights are taking the project seriously.

Us Weekly is reporting that Garrett Hedlund was officially approached to play Christian, but he’s passing on the male lead.

“Doing a possible trilogy was too big a commitment, and producers wouldn’t let him do just one him,” a source told Us.

Ian Somerhalder is also no longer in the running. While he’s been enthusiastic about being potentially considered, a source said that, at a Comic-Con party on July 20, E.L. was “telling people the part won’t go to Ian.”

So, there are the two names you can officially withdraw from the Grey prospects. Just 4,523 more rumored names to go…
