Hugh Hefner. biography
Hugh Marston Hefner was born on April 9, 1926, in Chicago, Illinois and ignited his journalism career by landing an entry-level job with Esquire magazine after graduating from the University of Illinois with a B.A. in 1950.
Featuring racy material infused with literary collections from legendary authors such as Ernest Hemingway, the publication first implanted the idea of a similar layout. Hugh, however, left the magazine when he was refused a $5 raise.
After raising $8,000 from numerous investors, Hugh launched Playboy magazine – a name representing elite lifestyles and class. With a colored picture of Marilyn Monroe posing in a kitchen on the cover of the first issue, the publication easily sold 50,000 copies.
Hugh specifically chose the infamous Playboy logo due to its playfulness and sexual innuendo. By 1959, the magazine was selling around one million copies per month. A year later, Hugh turned into the face of Playboy, assuming his legendary wardrobe of a silk smoking jacket and pipe while socializing with the celebrities and wealthy elites.
Seen as a sex symbol, Hugh continued building the Playboy image by investing in hotel resorts, film production companies, nightclubs, implementing the Playboy bunnies as well as the TV shows Playboy’s Penthouse (1959-60) and Playboy After Dark (1969-70).
Despite being charged for selling obscene literature in 1963 and enduring an economical collapse, the magazine continued pulling in the big bucks, ending 1972 with $12 million in sales. Three years later, Hugh relocated to Los Angeles where he was met with celebrity status and even more success.
Hugh went on to be inducted into the Hall of Fame of the American Society of Magazine Editors (1998), obtain the Henry Johnson Fisher Award (2002) and inducted as an honorary member of the Harvard Lampoon (2002).
A few years later, Hugh starred in his hit reality series The Girls Next Door (2005-2009), which showed his lifestyle as an actual playboy amongst his girlfriend bunnies Kendra Wilkinson, Holly Madison and Bridger Marquardt.
Aside from being a playboy, Hugh made his acting debut in the TV series Burke’s Law (1965). He has also appeared in numerous shows, including The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1993), Sex and the City (2000) and Entourage (2005).
