There’s a phenomenon in Hollywood and it's all about the DJ craze. Everyone wants to know them, date them, claim to be "with the DJ" and even try to spin with them. DJ's are literally becoming modern day rock stars. They’re jet setting around the world and spinning for A-list celebs at the hottest venues and have become regulars in the weekly tabloids.
Last night we caught up with one of Hollywood’s freshest DJ's Micheal Stone AKA DJ StoneRokk. He gave us the scoop on his experiences with Britney Spears, Brad Pitt, and Penelope Cruz.
He credits the movie “Juice” as his inspiration for becoming a DJ when he first saw the flick at the age of 14. DJ AM once said that DJ StoneRokk was the best DJ in town and these two would have ‘spin off’s’ which would lead to one setting the bar higher for the other.
Being in the business, he obviously has run-ins with celebs all the time, but he’s definitely not the star struck type and never bought into the Hollywood hype. He's a regular white t-shirt and jeans type of guy who loves to always "push the envelope" when mixing the beats. "I play good music and if you have a problem with that then there is something wrong with you."
Although DJ Stone is enjoying his success, he does admit that it wasn't always easy. "At first people didn't like what I played. People here follow the trends, whatever is cool."
When we asked for some juicy details about incidents with celebs he told us about a really interesting experience that involved the pop princess herself, Britney Spears. While recently DJing in Las Vegas at club Moon at the Palms where he spins every Friday night, Britney Spears, Mario Lopez, Paris Hilton and George Maloof were all in the club. DJ Stone was given a CD and was told to play track 1 and 3. He had no idea what he about to play or it was any good, but it was a request by the big man himself, George Maloof, so he had no choice.
As soon as he heard the song he knew it was Britney’s newly recorded track and they wanted to get the crowds reaction. The track had literally been recorded earlier that day! When he played it the first time, the crowd was moving; however, he was ordered to play the song repeatedly, which drove the crowd out of the dance floor. Anxious to make the crowd happy while not pissing off the big guys, he mixed Justin’s latest tracks into the beats and someway, somehow he made it work.
One night a wasted Janice Dickinson came up to DJ Stone and asked for Led Zeplin and told him to "work it bitch". Stone turned to her and said, "Who are you?" She replied, "I'm Janice Dickinson bitch" and he replied, "What does that mean?" her response was "I don't know".
A week ago Penelope Cruz was at Area on a Saturday night (which is his usual gig on Saturdays) and she requested Gwen Stefani's "Wind It Up." After DJ Stone refused she begged for "Sexy back" by Justin Timberlake and he refused again cause he had already played it. He pretty much plays what he wants, when he wants and only takes requests if they’re good ones.
Although he usually doesn't get star struck he did mention one incident at the "Oceans 11" wrap up party that really got him psyched. He was spinning beats to a house of A-Listers which included George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon. One of Clooney's people came up to DJ Stone and said that Brad Pitt never attends parties, and if he does he's always in and out but this time, Brad not only stayed, but was "wilding" out to DJ Stone’s beats. I don’t know if it gets any better than that!
When we asked him if he would date any celebrities, he told us that he would never date a star to become famous. He wants to be famous for being a DJ. Now if you’re in L.A. and want to experience DJ Stone for yourself, you can find him at Privilege on Tuesday nights, Les Deux on Wednesday, and Club Area on Saturday. Guess what ladies, Stone is single and always ready to mingle!
After our interview we headed over to Tuesday night hot spot Club Privilege and heard him in action. Some party goers in the house included Jesse McCartney with his girl Katie Cassidy, Lauren Conrad, Roger Cross, MTV's TwentyFourSeven crew including our favorite Frankie Delgado and Paris Hilton's sidekick Brandon Davis.
