Exactly one year after
Heath Ledger died from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs, he received a posthumous Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of The Joker in "The Dark Knight."
While most actors spent the day celebrating their nominations, Heath's family spent it mourning his death. "To us ... it seems like merely yesterday, and we are all still nursing broken hearts," Kate Ledger, the actor's sister, said Friday.
"Although we would love to have him here with us, we are so proud and so excited on his behalf," his other sister Ashleigh Bell said.
"In Heath's words, he had the time of his life portraying the Joker and said that it was the most fun he'd ever had working on a film," Bell added.
If Heath does win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, he'll become the second actor to posthumously win an Oscar, following Peter Finch for 1976's "Network."
"What an unbelievable legacy he has left for Matilda and our family," Bell said. The family had already said that his Golden Globe win earlier this month will go to Matilda when she's older, so we're assuming she'll inherit his Oscar as well. So tragic. He was so very talented. Hope Matilda will grow up to realize how amazing her Dad was.
