If you’ve ever seen a movie about winning the lottery, this isn’t necessarily a compliment. It's usually a bunch of headache followed by wishing you had never won the lottery in the first place.
In an interview on CBS Sunday Morning, the Coldplay singer talked about his high-profile marriage. It’s actually the first time he’s ever talked about it. These two go to great lengths to keep their marriage out of the limelight. Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a picture of them together. Even their wedding photos were probably taken separately.
Apparently there have been rumors that Martin has only had one serious relationship in his life.
“That’s right, I’m in it,” the singer confirmed.
Host Anthony Mason then told Chris that it was quite a leap to go from never having a serious girlfriend to husband and father.
“It’s a big leap? What, from being a loser, to going out with an Oscar winner?’ It’s a giant leap. Let’s face it, it’s like winning the lottery."
Except that when you win the lottery, you don’t have to listen to someone talk about dinner parties and refer to themselves as ‘Goopy’ for the rest of your life.
Chris says that having children with Gwyneth has given him more purpose in life.
“It’s made it more focused. And you have a purpose. I like what it does, just the idea of having to work hard so your kids are OK."
And as happy as Chris is about his marriage, Gwyneth might be even happier. She likened her husband to legendary Spanish artist Pablo Picasso, saying, “he’s a musical genius. It’s like living with Picasso…”
Paltrow says that part of the reason the two are so secretive about their relationship is to protect Martin’s rock star status.
"He makes music for his fans, and he doesn't want people to conjure a lame famous couple when they're getting into his music. I get it."
But Martin says when he walks down the street with his fellow band mates, people don’t even notice them.
"I'm telling you, it isn't like that for me - for us. People walk right past us. I'm not complaining. It may seem weird but I wouldn't want it any other way. When we did our last gigs at the O2, I went there by Tube. I was with all the Coldplay fans and not one single person recognized me. It's true. When I'm on my own it just doesn't happen."
So why doesn’t he get recognized? According to Chris, it’s because he’s not a hot chick. Martin thinks female singers like Lady Gaga and Beycone get recognized more because they’re attractive women. But showing up to places in a giant egg probably doesn’t hurt, either.
"Their fame is more a real thing. And with people like Beyonce and Lady Gaga ... well it's different for girls. If you're very attractive you get more attention, you need more attention - like Beyonce. People would stare at her if she was a bus driver.”
