Giuliana Rancic's Double Mastectomy Was a Success

E! host Giuliana Rancic underwent a successful double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery on Tuesday night for her breast cancer.

Her husband Bill Rancic told E!: "G is doing really well ... Her surgery lasted about four hours and the doctors were very pleased with the result. She had a little bit of pain through the night but is feeling much better this morning and was cracking jokes."

Yup, she’ll probably be back on The Fashion Police by Friday. Someone's gotta keep Joan Rivers in check.

Giuliana added, "I want to thank all the viewers and fans for their support and prayers. The tweets and notes have not gone unnoticed. I am very grateful."

It was only three months ago that Rancic was diagnosed with breast cancer and made the decision to go public with her struggle. Rancic told The Today Show host Ann Curry that after careful consideration, she decided the procedure was the only option for her.

"For me, it was important to get the cancer out," Giulana said. "That's what I wanted to do, just get it out ... At the end, to be honest, all it came down to was just choosing to live, and not looking over my shoulder for the rest of my life."

It’s been a battle for Giuliana, who admitted she often has moments alone where she cries to herself. But hey, if you can deal with Ryan Seacrest on a daily basis, you can do this too, Giuliana!

She added that, “with a double mastectomy, I have less than a one percent chance of getting it back. With another lumpectomy, radiation and medication, I could have a 20, 30 or 40 percent chance in my lifetime.”

The surgery, which removes the entire breast, often has an unpleasant stigma. But Rancic says, “The word [mastectomy] seemed so scary to me at first. After doing research and seeing the advancements, the surgery has come a long way from 20 years ago. The results can be incredible.”
