You always hear stories about normal people who get approached by talent scouts at the mall and then become huge stars. In fact, that’s the only reason I go to the mall, ever.
Nothing sounds better than falling backasswards into a life of fame and fortune without having to pay any of your dues. That’s my dream, actually. And I think it gives all of us hope. Here are eight celebrities who accidentally became famous.
Jason Statham: He went from Olympic hero to London street urchin, but when he was picked up by an agent while working out, everything changed for Jason Statham. He got a modeling job for French Connection and appeared in Guy Ritchie’s Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
Gisele Bundchen: Bundchen was at a shopping mall on a school field trip, eating McDonalds, when a modeling agency approached her. She was selected for a national contest, where she came in second, and then placed fourth in a world-modeling contest. She then moved to New York City to pursue a career. This is the only good thing to come out of eating McDonald’s in a mall food court.
Hulk Hogan: Hulk Hogan never wanted to be a wrestler. Like all of us, he wanted to be a rock star. He was performing with his band, Rukus, when some pro wrestlers saw him and thought he’d be better in the squared circle. He went from obscurity to becoming one of the most famous wrestlers of all time. And whaddya know, he’s now back to obscurity.
Mel Gibson: Mel Gibson never planned to be in the spotlight, if you couldn’t already tell. He was doing okay as a stage actor, but a friend told him he should audition for a movie role--Mad Max. The night before the audition, Gibson got into a bar fight (surprised?) and showed up to the audition with a bunch of bruises. The director said the film “needed freaks” and invited Gibson back for a second audition.
Tila Tequila: Tequila was discovered by a Playboy scout at Sharpstown Mall in Houston, TX when she was a teenager. I’m from the area, and every city has that mall that you don’t want to go to, and in Houston, Sharpstown is that mall. So I have no idea what a Playboy scout was doing there. Before getting discovered, Tequila was in a gang, where she experienced a drive-by shooting at 16 years-old.
Marilyn Monroe: Marilyn worked at a factory inspecting parachutes when a photographer put her in YANK magazine. The photographer let her know how hot she was and encouraged her to pursue a career. She did, and the rest is blonde bombshell history.
Burt Reynolds: Because he was born with a standalone mustache, Burt Reynolds wanted to be a cop. While attending classes at a junior college, he was asked to read Shakespeare out loud. His professor was floored with his reading and encouraged him to join a play. He did, and his performance was so awesome, that he won a scholarship to the Hyde Park Playhouse in New York. Reynolds’ acting reputation got him a ton of opportunities, and his theater career took off, eventually leading to film.
Steven Seagal: Legend has it that CAA talent agent Michael Ovitz wanted to prove a theory that he could turn the most uncharismatic person into a celebrity. He was taking martial arts classes from Seagal and decided to make the instructor his guinea pig. Did he do the same thing with Josh Brolin?
